UK inflation shapes business decisions through wages, input costs, borrowing conditions and customer demand. The latest published Office for National Statistics data showed CPI inflation at 2.6% in the 12 months to June 2026, down from 2.8% in May, while services inflation remained higher at 3.6%.

UK Inflation and the Cost Base for Businesses

Headline inflation is only the starting point for company planning. A manufacturer may care more about energy and imported inputs, a hospitality operator about food and wages, and a professional-services firm about salaries and office costs. Businesses should therefore compare the headline CPI rate with the price pressures that actually dominate their own cost base.

Inflation also affects margins through pricing decisions. Passing every cost increase to customers can weaken demand, while absorbing increases indefinitely can erode profitability. The practical task is to identify which costs are temporary, which are structural and where customers are most sensitive to price changes.

Why Services Inflation Matters to Employers

Services inflation is closely watched because it can reflect persistent domestic cost pressures, including wages. For employers, that makes pay reviews, recruitment budgets and productivity improvements especially important. Rising nominal wages do not automatically create a problem if output per employee is improving at the same time.

Companies should also connect inflation planning with monetary policy. The Bank of England’s current Bank Rate influences borrowing and refinancing costs, which can amplify or offset other pressures. Our guide to Bank of England base rate explains that transmission mechanism.

What Businesses Should Monitor

  • the latest ONS CPI and services-inflation readings;
  • sector-specific wage settlements and hiring pressure;
  • energy, transport and supplier-contract renewals;
  • customer demand after price changes;
  • borrowing and refinancing costs.

The key is not to forecast inflation perfectly. It is to build budgets that remain workable under more than one plausible cost scenario.
