Bank of England Base Rate and Business Borrowing

Bank of England Base Rate Explained

Bank of England base rate decisions influence the cost of borrowing across the UK economy. For businesses, the most important effects are usually seen in variable-rate debt, refinancing, working-capital facilities and the hurdle rate used to judge new investment.

Bank of England Base Rate and Company Borrowing

The Monetary Policy Committee sets Bank Rate to help return inflation to the government’s 2% target. As of the Bank’s latest decision on 30 July 2026, Bank Rate was maintained at 3.75%.

Commercial lenders do not mechanically copy Bank Rate, but changes in the policy rate feed into their own funding costs and pricing. A company with floating-rate borrowing may feel the effect quickly, while a business with fixed-rate debt may face the change only when it refinances.

Where the Impact Appears in a Business

  • Working capital: overdrafts and revolving facilities can become more or less expensive.
  • Investment: a higher cost of capital can make marginal projects less attractive.
  • Refinancing: debt that was cheap when first arranged may be replaced at a different rate.
  • Cash management: deposit returns may also change, partially offsetting borrowing costs for cash-rich firms.
  • Customer demand: higher rates can reduce household and business spending, affecting revenue as well as finance costs.

What Finance Teams Should Watch

Businesses should avoid treating the headline Bank Rate as the only number that matters. The relevant comparison is the actual interest margin on company facilities, the maturity profile of debt and how sensitive cash flow is to a change in financing costs.

For example, a hypothetical £1 million floating-rate facility priced at Bank Rate plus a 2.5 percentage-point margin would cost 6.25% before fees when Bank Rate is 3.75%. The example is illustrative rather than a quotation for any particular borrower.

Rate decisions also interact with inflation. Our UK inflation and business costs analysis explains why the Bank may keep policy restrictive even when some price pressures are easing.
