China slowdown concerns returned to London markets after official data showed the Chinese economy grew 4.3% year on year in the second quarter of 2026, down from 5.0% in the first quarter and below market expectations.

China Slowdown Hits Commodity-Linked UK Shares

The immediate UK market impact was most visible among mining companies. London-listed miners are sensitive to expectations for Chinese construction, manufacturing and infrastructure demand because China remains a major consumer of industrial metals and raw materials.

On 15 July, the FTSE 100 finished slightly lower as mining stocks came under pressure following the weaker Chinese growth data. The reaction illustrates an important feature of the London market: movements in the index can reflect global commodity demand as much as conditions in the domestic British economy.

Why Chinese Growth Matters to London

China’s second-quarter performance was uneven. Manufacturing and exports remained relatively resilient, while domestic demand and investment were weaker. For UK-listed resource companies, the key question is whether softer Chinese demand translates into lower commodity prices, reduced volumes or weaker earnings expectations.

This is also why investors and business leaders should be cautious about treating the FTSE 100 as a simple proxy for the UK economy. Many of its largest constituents earn substantial revenue overseas and respond quickly to changes in China, the United States, currencies and global commodity markets.

What UK Businesses Should Watch

  • Chinese industrial production and fixed-asset investment.
  • Commodity prices, especially copper and other industrial metals.
  • Sterling movements and their effect on multinational earnings.
  • Company guidance from London-listed miners with large China exposure.

The useful business signal is not that slower Chinese GDP automatically means a weak UK economy. It is that London’s equity market contains globally exposed companies whose earnings can move with external demand. For firms selling into mining, engineering, logistics or commodity-linked supply chains, that connection matters directly.
